Overview
This is a one-day, 8-hour interactive course which will cover conditions and injuries associated with the shoulder joint. Conditions that will be covered include AC joint pathologies, shoulder instabilities, clavicular injuries, and nerve palsies specific to the shoulder girdle.
The course will have a practical component and will focus on clinical reasoning and evidence-based treatment options for the above conditions. It will aim to improve therapists' confidence with assessment and treatment of these conditions and provide clarification when to engage and refer to other clinicians.
CPD
This course is 10 CPD hours for attendance only.
Participants may elect to undertake the course assessment. Participants will receive 25 CPD hours if they complete and pass the assessment.

This course is an AHTA Intermediate Course.
It is suitable for practitioners:
- That are experienced and wish to upskill or revise current best-practice.
- Wishing to gain greater knowledge in shoulder pathologies and its application to hand therapy.
- Continued professional learning (CPD hours)
Pre-requisites
- AHPRA registered Physiotherapists or Occupational Therapists
- It is an intermediate course designed for members of the AHTA with some experience in assessing and treating clients with shoulder pathologies.
- A sound knowledge of shoulder anatomy and mechanics
- Experience and competency with basic shoulder assessment, screening the cervical spine and basic treatment principles for the management of common shoulder conditions.
- Have attended the AHTA Level 1 Introductory Shoulder Course OR have completed the Online Shoulder Revision Module
Learning outcomes
At completion of the course, therapists will be able to:
- Apply and demonstrate knowledge of assessment and treatment for shoulder conditions and factors that influence adherence to treatment, prognosis, and long-term outcomes.
- Perform and evaluate a comprehensive subjective and objective assessment of the shoulder.
- Analyse your subjective and objective assessment and apply your understanding of diagnosis, pathophysiology and evidence base to create and justify your management plan.
- Prescribe and demonstrate an exercise program for various shoulder pathologies.
- Evaluate own skill set limits to recognise when to refer or engage other clinicians.
Quality
AHTA courses aim to meet Australian Quality Framework (AQF) Level 8 and are designed according to best practice education standards.
Pre-learning
You MUST* attend a pre-course webinar on how to use Canvas, an online Learning Management System. You will receive the details for this pre-course webinar via email.
You MUST* have a laptop or desktop for this pre-course webinar and the course. You cannot use an iPad or iPhone.
The course pre-learning will be available in your portal, via the AHTA website, approximately four weeks before the course.
We recommend that you commence the pre-learning as soon as it is available.
This course's pre-learning includes assigned pre-reading (3-5 articles) and some pre-learning videos. The total time expected to complete these would be 2–3 hours.
In addition, if you have not completed the Shoulder Introduction Course, you will need to complete the Online Revision Module, consisting of articles and videos.
* If you do not attend the pre-course webinar or have the correct equipment, the AHTA will not be able to assist you at the course or the exam, as this will impact the learning time of others in the group.
Content access
The AHTA uses an online Learning Management System (LMS) called Canvas. Refer to 'Pre-learning.'
This will be your ‘online textbook’ for all course content – including videos, pictures, written content, references, and links to other web pages.
When you have registered for the course, you will be emailed a link to enrol.
Once you receive this link, you are encouraged to create login details, ready to use on the day. The Home Page includes important information, such as Course Information, Assessment, and Help and Support. The Modules tab is where you will find the course content, including any pre-learning. Announcements are where the course presenters can communicate with you before or during the course. Discussion allows course participants to ask questions or communicate with the presenters and other course participants.

Cancellation
We endeavour to run all courses as scheduled; however, our courses sometimes do not meet the required minimum numbers to go ahead.
We advise that you DO NOT book flights and/or accommodation until the registration closing date (one month before the course).

Assessment
Participants may choose to undertake the assessment.
The course has two assessment components:
- Practical demonstration and competency of shoulder assessment and screening techniques during the course
- A 60-minute online exam held 3 weeks post course held via an online platform. The exam will consist of two parts. Firstly, viewing a video case study where participants will be asked short answer questions on the subjective, objective and treatment. The second part will consist of multiple choice and short answer format based on course content and pre-learning. 65% pass mark
Participants who cannot or do not wish to complete the exam as scheduled and advertised will forfeit the option of a Certificate of Attainment. A Certificate of Attendance will be provided.
Exam
This course has an exam. The exam is not compulsory. Refer to CPD and Assessment for more information.

Time
Face-to-face courses are held from 9.00 am – 5.30 pm local time.
