How do you plan on celebrating Hand Therapy Week?

Our patients could be forgiven for asking ‘what is hand therapy?’ as many are not aware of the role of practitioners of hand therapy. It is fascinating to hear how many of my patients have not heard of a practitioner of hand therapy, but soon learn after injuring their upper limb!
Hand therapy is described as the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb - shoulder to finger tip. Practitioners of hand therapy are Occupational Therapists or Physiotherapists who have undergone additional training and are recognised by the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA) as having shown their skills and knowledge in the field.

Hand Therapy Week is our way of celebrating our love of hand therapy, and at the same time, a way of bringing awareness and appreciation to the hand therapy field.  This year, the AHTA are celebrating Hand Therapy Week in many ways.
There are two competitions for therapists to enter Comp. No1. This involves submitting a short video, there’s $500 each up for grabs, for the best private and the best public therapist offering. This is where we hope our young therapists will shine. The topic is ‘Choose Hand Therapy’ Click here for more details: Hand Therapy Week - Australian Hand Therapy Association (ahta.com.au)

Competition number 2 is for our therapists to share a ‘clinical pearl’. A clinical pearl might include something little that helped their patient turn the corner in their recovery or something a little more substantial that helped them achieve a major milestone. This one will suit every therapist...we all have encountered small techniques, tools, applications that have made a difference to our patients rehabilitation. These will be shared on social media for therapists and patients alike and the most likes will walk away with $150 in cash and the glory. Competition number 2 is for our therapists to share a ‘clinical pearl’. Throughout Hand Therapy Week, the AHTA will be sharing lots of fun facts and videos on social media. We’d love your support with sharing these. Feel free to tag a friend or share your experience with hand therapy. Photos are a great way to show what you have experienced. Do you have a photo of a fun fracture (if we can even call a fracture ‘fun’), a colorful orthosis you have made, an interesting exercise you have prescribed or a photo of a client adapting to an injury. We’d love to see it!

As therapists, we love hand therapy and we want others to benefit from all we have to offer. From broken bones to ligament sprains, arthritis, tennis elbow, to good old carpal tunnel syndrome and beyond! We are excited to celebrate Hand Therapy Week with you this 7-13th June 2021.
