Participants in our immobilisation course will learn principles underpinning clinical reasoning for design and prescription of immobilisation orthoses for the fingers, thumb and wrist. Learn to take patterns and master a variety of splinting materials to allow you to fabricate professional looking, comfortable splints to meet your patient’s needs.

  • Finger immobiliastion orthosis  
  • Wrist immobilisation orthosis  
  • Hand based thumb immobilisation orthosis
  • Wrist, hand and finger immobilisation orthosis
  • Hand-based finger immobilisation orthosis 

4. PowerPoint: Clinical Reasoning & Orthosis Self Critique 

5. Short written exam 

At the completion of this course, therapists will have:

  • Detailed knowledge of the theoretical basis of orthotic design for immobilisation of the upper limb
  • Detailed knowledge of the properties of thermoplastic materials and products 
  • An ability to apply knowledge of anatomy, histology and pathology of the musculoskeletal system or neurological dysfunction to the design and fabrication of upper limb immobilisation orthoses 
  • An understanding of orthotic fabrication as a therapeutic modality within the treatment regime for patients
  • An ability to fabricate orthoses for the immobilisation of the upper limb using a variety of thermoplastic materials
  • An ability to analyse the quality of a fabricated orthosis specific to a patient’s clinical and functional requirements.

Assessments

Participants will receive pre-reading material containing general information about the course, structured exercises and references to assist in preparation for the workshop. Participants are strongly advised to purchase a copy of the textbook “Hand Splinting Principles of Design and Fabrication” (which can be purchased by clicking here).

The course has 3 assessment components:

  1. Practical demonstration of orthosis fabrication: completion of all orthoses and evidence of competence in orthotic fabrication during the course
  2. Examination: 1hr written exam completed at the end of the course (From 4pm on the last day)
  3. Case study: Submission of a case study using evidenced-based practise decision making and application of clinical knowledge submitted 6 weeks after the course.

Professional Development Credit

This is a certificate workshop, so participants are encouraged to undertake the assessment that will allow them to claim 50 CPD hours for attendance at a two-day course, successful completion requires a pass in all 3 assessment components.

Participants not wishing to undertake assessment may claim 16 hours credit for attendance at the two-day course. For those wishing to apply to become an Accredited Hand Therapist with the AHTA, this is an Elective course and successful assessment and completion of all components is a requirement for your application.

About the presenter - Hamish Anderson

BA, BSc(Occ Thy), CHT, Accredited Hand Therapist as awarded by the Australian Hand Therapy Association

Hamish graduated from La Trobe University with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy in 1995. After graduating he worked in New York, qualifying as a CHT in 2001. Returning to Australia in 2002, Hamish began his own private hand therapy practice, whilst continuing to work within the public hospital system.

Hamish is now the senior hand therapy clinician at the Austin Hospital, combining this role with his private practice and his work at the Hawthorn Football Club. He has a specific interest in treating athletes with hand injuries, and in dysfunctional wrist biomechanics, with published articles in both areas. He also co-authored the chapters on the hand and the wrist in the current edition of Brukner and Khans’s “Clinical Sports Medicine”.  Hamish is an active member of the AHTA, currently the President-Elect of the association. He has previously served as the Victorian representative and was the convener of the 2018 national conference.

 

About the presenter - Terra Bredy

OT, CHT, Accredited Hand Therapist as awarded by the Australian Hand Therapy Association

In 1996, Terra graduated with a degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Since that time, she has worked in a variety of public and private therapy clinics throughout Canada and the United States and, in 2002, she obtained a certification in Hand Therapy. She became a full member of the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA) in 2009 and served as the Queensland Divisional Representative in 2013.

During a brief stint in California from 2014 to 2017, Terra was an Adjunct Professor at Stanbridge University where she lectured at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and also served as a postgraduate research advisor on projects focussed on Yoga as a therapeutic modality for CRPS and on goniometric measurement techniques for wrist flexion/extension. Terra is an Accredited Hand Therapist with the AHTA and a Certified Hand Therapist with the HTCC. She is based in Brisbane where she works as a Clinic Coordinator with EKCO Hand Therapy and as the owner/operator of LeatherWorks Splinting, fabricating custom leather orthotics.
