Level 2 AHTA Certificate Course in Hand & Upper Limb Mobilisation Splinting (Dynamic & Serial Progressive)

Course Description

The focus of this two-day course is on the principles and practice of mobilising splinting for the hand and upper limb. The course uses a dynamic format of lectures, case studies, demonstrations and hands-on practical activities to meet your learning needs. Participants will have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of splinting materials, fabricating numerous splints for the fingers, thumb and wrist including manufacture of articulated splints, designing outrigger profiles, and using different methods of force application and types of traction. This splinting course is intended for the practicing OT, PT or hand therapist with intermediate to advanced splinting skills.

Pre-Requisites for this Course

An understanding of the principles of immobilisation splinting

bullet

Confidence and efficiency in the fabrication of static splints (i.e. ability to fabricate a static wrist splint in 15 minutes)

bullet

Familiarity with handling a variety of thermoplastics

bullet

Comprehension of pre-reading material prior to course

NB: The AHTA Certificate in Hand Splinting (Level 1) is not a prerequisite for this course.

What You Will Learn/Course Objectives

Understand principles behind the selection of mobilisation and dynamic splint design

bullet

understand principles behind selection and design of torque transmission splints

Course Schedule

Pre reading will be forwarded to all participants prior to the course

Saturday

Demonstration and practical work on mobilising splints for the fingers including

bullet

serial casts

bullet

hand and wrist based splints incorporating use of spring wire, various outrigger profiles and traction systems

Sunday

bullet

Demonstration and practical work on mobilising splints for the thumb, wrist, forearm and elbow including:
bullet

dynamic and serial progressive splints

bullet

methods of articulation incorporating simple and prefabricated hinges

bullet

torque transmission splints for nerve palsies

bullet

Short written exam

Written case study submitted following completion of the course.

Please note:  The workshop runs from 9am to 5pm each day and the exam is held from 4 to 5pm on the Sunday

Presenter: Megan Fitzgerald - COURSE FULL.  The Alfred Hospital is located on Commercial Road Prahran which is 10 minutes tram ride from the Melbourne CBD. There are many accommodation options in Melbourne CBD, however the closest to The Alfred is the Saville Hotel (about 2 minute walk).

About The Presenters

Melissa James
B.Occ. Thy (Hons) Grad.Dip Hand Rehab. M.A.H.T.A Melissa has specialised in hand therapy since 1993 and has a post-graduate diploma in hand and upper limb rehabilitation.  She has
lectured to both undergraduate and post-graduate occupational therapists and physiotherapists at the University of Queensland and Griffith University in relation to hand therapy and splinting.  She has also lectured widely to therapists in regional Queensland on numerous topics relating to hand therapy.  She has worked in both public and private settings and now works in her own private hand therapy practice.
