Level 1 AHTA Certificate Course in Hand & Upper Limb Immobilisation Splinting (Static)

Course Description

The focus of this two-day course is on the static splint fabrication process. A dynamic format using lectures, case studies, demonstrations and hands-on practical activities will help to improve your splinting efficiency and take the fear factor out of splinting. Participates will learn principles of immobilisation splinting for the fingers, thumb, wrist and elbow and gain confidence in upper extremity assessment as relevant to splint making. Learn to take patterns and master a variety of splinting materials to allow you to fabricate professional looking, comfortable splints to meet your patient’s needs.

What You Will Learn/Course Objectives

Understand principles behind the selection of custom-made and prefabricated static splints

Gain awareness of the variety of splint materials, tools and components on the market

Develop skills necessary to successfully fabricate select splints using various materials

About The Presenters

BRISBANE  -  Melissa James    B.Occ.Thy (Hons) P.Grad. Dip. H& ULR

Melissa has worked primarily in hand and upper limb rehabilitation since graduating from the University of Queensland in 1991.  She completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Hand and Upper Limb Rehabilitation in 1997, through Curtin University.  Melissa is a full member of the Australian Hand Therapy Association and has served two terms as Queensland state representative.   Melissa has taught splinting to undergraduate occupational therapy students at the University of Queensland for many years as well as conducting numerous workshops on splinting and other hand therapy related topics to OTs and physiotherapists throughout Queensland.

PERTH - Judith Wilton   MS, PGradDipHthSc, BAppSc(OT)

Judith has worked primarily in the area of upper limb rehabilitation since graduating as an OT some 30+ years ago. She currently works in her own hand therapy practice and has consulting positions with the major children's hospital in WA, Cerebral Palsy Association and Disability Services Commission. Judith held a faculty position at Curtin University of Technology for many years where she co-ordinated teaching of undergraduate and post graduate programmes in rehabilitation of the hand & upper limb. Judith has several post graduate qualifications, has published a book on hand splinting, numerous journal articles in addition to presenting many workshops both nationally and internationally. Judith has held several executive positions in the Australian Hand Therapy Association and is a Life Member.

PERTH - Barbara Hall  MHS, BAppSc(OT) and Certification in Hand Therapy (HTCC, USA currently certified)

Barbara graduated from Curtin University, WA in 1989.  While working overseas at the University of Louisville, in USA she developed her passion for hand therapy and acute trauma.   She achieved her Certification in Hand Therapy in 1997 (HTCC, USA) and a Masters of Health Science Degree from the University of Indianapolis in 1998.  Barbara currently works at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital in WA as a Senior Clinical Specialist in Hand and UL and is involved in teaching undergraduate and masters entry students at Curtin University. During the past 5 years she has conducted a multi centre randomised research project on extensor tendon rehabilitation, and hopes to begin a new project on flexor tendons in 2008. She is current President of the AHTA.

ADELAIDE - Kathy Minchin   BAppSc(OT)

Kathy has worked in private practice in Adelaide treating hand injuries for over 20 years. The greater percentage of her work is treating post operative conditions, most of which require splinting of some sort.  She taught a 60 hour post graduate certificate course in splinting to OT’s at Uni SA some years ago but now works solely in her private practice.  Kathy is a full member of the AHTA and has recently resigned as the SA Divisional Coordinator after 4 years.

SYDNEY - Cathy Merry B App Sc (Physiotherapy), M Hlth Sc (Physiotherapy – Hand and Upper Limb Major), CHT (USA)

Cathy graduated from Cumberland College of Health Sciences in 1986 and has worked in the area of hand and upper limb rehabilitation since 1990.  Cathy worked at Sydney Hand Therapy Centre for 14 years before commencing work in her own hand therapy practices at Campbelltown and Liverpool 18 months ago.  She completed her Master of Health Science (Physiotherapy – Hand and Upper Limb Major) in 2003.  She passed the Hand Therapy Certification exam in the same year.  She has been a full member of the AHTA since 1994 and recently served on the committee for the IFSSH/IFSHT Conference held in Sydney in 2007.  She has taught both undergraduate and post graduate students and practicing therapists both in NSW, South East Asia and New Zealand.
